By JIM GOMEZ,Associated Press Writer AP - Monday, June 29MANILA, Philippines - Officials say suspected al-Qaida-linked militants have killed seven policemen in a road ambush following the killing of two army soldiers in a separate attack in the southern Philippines.
Navy Rear Admiral Alex Pama said suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen opened fire Sunday on a police convoy along a dirt road in Sumisip township on Basilan island, killing seven policemen and wounding two others.
Pama says the gunmen apparently wanted to avenge the recent setbacks suffered in battles with government troops.
Two army soldiers helping construct a school building were killed by suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen in a separate attack late Saturday, Basilan police chief Salik Macapantar said.
