Quake shakes Indonesia's Sumatra

Saturday, March 6, 2010
JAKARTA, Indonesia – An Indonesian official says a magnitude-6.5 quake has shaken the western shore of Sumatra island.
Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency official Gian Ginanjar says there are no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the undersea quake that struck late Friday 74 miles (119 kilometers) southeast of Pagai Selatan, an island off the western coast of Sumatra.
He says the quake has no potential to create a tsunami. It occurred 6 miles (10 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.
Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the sprawling archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone.
