David Goodhue - AHN Reporter San Francisco, CA (AHN) - Two brothers mauled by an escaped tiger at the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day in 2007 will be paid $900,000 by the zoo.
Sam Singer, a spokesman for the zoo, told local television station KTVU that the money is "a positive settlement because it allows everybody to move forward."
The 250-pound tiger, Tatiana, jumped out of her enclosure on Dec 25, 2007 and killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr., and injured his friends Amritpal Dhaliwal, then 19, and Kulbir Dhaliwal, who was 23 at the time. The tiger was shot and killed by police.
The brothers sued the zoo last November and were represented by noted defense attorney Mark Geragos. The lawsuit claimed the men's civil rights were violated and accused the zoo of negligence for not building a moat big enough that the tiger couldn't escape.
The suit also accused Singer of libel and slander for suggesting the men might have been taunting the cat.
